Bonjour Bruxelles

elokuuta 05, 2018

My trip's first part you can find from here.
After Berlin I jumped to an airplane that was headed to Brussels. Back then I was still so excited, that I got to for once go see the city before I moved there (and here's what ended up happening). From saturday to monday nothing worth writing happened, so I decided not to write about those this time.

TUESDAY My first impression about Brussels was not good. My hotel was in a bad-ish area in Brussels and I even ended up wandering around for too long, which did not really make me happy after being awake for almost 20 hours and after spending too much time at the airport, waiting to check-in to a hotel. When I finally got to the hotel, I locked myself to my room and let my rest for once.

WEDNESDAY I got myself up from the bed earlier than ever before, even though I was still so tired. Because I had gotten the "pleasure" to wake up to the fact that I heard way too much from the neighbouring room. Things I would have not wanted to hear. I quickly left the hotel, because I did not really feel like talking to the cleaner, who only spoke French. And as my french is mostly limited to Bonjour, hon hon baguette I think it was perhaps better that way.

The first place I headed to was Manneken Pis, a tiny peeing boy statue. Thankfully I had read beforehand that a lot of people feel disappointed when they see the statue, since it really is tiny as heck. As the name says. Near Manneken Pis can also be found Tintin, his dog Snowy and Captain Haddock painted in a wall. I had before read that in Brussels there's also a Comic Street Strip and I must admit that at that moment it started to tempt me a lot. After I had checked Manneken Pis, it was finally time to eat something. Belgian waffles were the answerto my hunger this time. Yum, waffle that had Nutella on top was so good!

After eating the waffle and using the waffle place's wifi, I headed towards Grand Place. Grand Place, also known as Grote Markt, is the central square of Brussels, and it was full of people the whole time I was there. If wanted, one could have taken a horse carriage rides around the city from there but I was not really in a mood for that. There were a few performers at the square, which is the reason I stayed to sit down at the side of  the square to write and doodle to my travel notebook.

Parlamentarium olikin luultuani kiinnostavampi, joten sain tuhlattua siellä ihan mukavastikin aikaa. Tulipahan ainakin kuntoiltua.

After Grand Place I just wandered around, when all of a sudden I just decided to walk to Parlamentarium. Of course not everything went as planned, and for some stupid reason I tried to accidentally walk through the doors of European parliament. Thankfully they had guards, who of course didn't let me in. When I finally got inside, I was shocked when I got instructions for the guidemachine in finnish. It took me a while before I could answer back from my shock. Parlamentarium was more interesting than I could have imagined, so I spent a lot of time there. After Parlamentarium I started to however feel quite tired, so I decided to walk back to my hotel after getting food from Lidl. Not caring that it was close to 5 kilometres to my hotel. At least I got some exercise.

THURSDAY My Thursday I spent mostly just packing everything ready and exploring my surroundings trying to look for a magnet and a postcard to my growing magnet and postcard collection.

Ette tule katumaan.

FRIDAY It was time to head to my next destination in the afternoon, so I checked out of my hotel in the morning and took my luggage to safekeeping to the train station. After sitting for a while at the train station I was so bored, that I decided to make a spontaneous trip to the Atomium. Atomium was a lot bigger than I expected. The weather was lovely and I was hungry so I headed to the nearest stall that sold fries. Yum, my first belgian fries were so good. If you go to Brussels or Belgium in general, hunt down some belgian fries and belgian waffles to eat. You won't regret it.

After photographing Atomium and wandering around the park for long enough, I headed back to the train station. But there was still three hours until my train would leave and the thought of waiting at the Bruxelles Midi did not really tempt me that much. So before I ended up to the train station, I ran out of the metro and started to find my way to Cimetière d'Ixelles, Ixelles cemetery, because I had heard that it was beautiful. And the rumours were right, the cemetery was beautiful and wonderfully peaceful and on top of that all, the weather was perfect. Unfortunately I didn't realize to take any pictures from the cemetery. I definitely recommend visiting the cemetery, if you are just even slightly interested. From the cemetery I headed to explore more of the Ixelles and even though I had only seen a little bit of it, I had already decided that it was the part of the city I wanted to move to (well, not this time then but maybe someday).

Ixellesiä tarpeeksi tutkittuani huomasin kellon olevan jo todella paljon, ja lähdin suuntaamaan takaisin St.Gillesin ja juna-aseman suuntaan. Hetken juna-asemalla odoteltuani noudin vihdoinkin matkalaukkuni ja suuntasin Kölnin suuntaan menevään junaan. Mutta siitä lisää seuraavassa postauksessa.

When I had explored Ixelles enough I realized that clock was already quite a lot, so I decided to head back towards St.Gilles and the train station. After waiting at the train station for a little while, I went to get my luggage and jumped to a train heading towards Cologne. But about that I'll tell more in the next post.
